18 Count Cross Stitch Size Chart

18ct Aida puts eighteen nominal crosses into an inch, making a given stitch box more compact than it is on lower-count Aida. Choose it when the resulting physical size suits the project and the closer grid is comfortable to work. A smaller picture is a geometric outcome; thread coverage and the ease of finding holes remain decisions for your own materials.

18ct Aida gives 18 full crosses per inch: 18 ÷ 1 = 18. Use this chart for stitched inches and centimeters across 24 pattern sizes, with a separate, explicit 3-inch cutting margin per side.

Count describes nominal fabric spacing. Stitching over one on 18ct Aida gives 18 crosses per inch. Measure your own cloth in both directions before cutting.

Measurements use nominal count, then convert unrounded inches with 1 in = 2.54 cm. Display rounds half-up to two decimal places. Every cut on this page adds only 3 in per side: visible border 0 + finishing allowance 3. The main calculator normally starts with a separate 1.5 in border plus 3 in finishing; the links here explicitly select this table’s 0 + 3 example. Actual cloth, clamps, seams, mats and mounting may need different allowances.

Test handling as well as the finished footprint

Try the intended stitch, thread and lighting on spare cloth before cutting the main piece. Look at coverage from your expected viewing distance and check whether repeated passes move comfortably through the fabric. The standard two-strand estimate on the site is an adjustable planning input, not a rule for every 18ct project.

The current calculator suggests needle 26 at this effective density as a starting point. Treat that as a sample choice, then check your thread, eye clearance and fabric rather than treating the number as a guaranteed match.

Two decisions for this project

A 120 × 160 portrait for a compact display

The stitched area is 6.67 × 8.89 in (16.93 × 22.58 cm). The table adds finishing space to give 12.67 × 14.89 in (32.17 × 37.82 cm) of fabric. Compare the first rectangle with the measured display opening before deciding how much border to show.

A 300 × 400 picture that still needs substantial cloth

Even at this density, the design measures 16.67 × 22.22 in (42.33 × 56.44 cm). Its example cut is 22.67 × 28.22 in (57.57 × 71.68 cm). Check your work support and fabric source against both sides; a compact stitch does not turn a high-stitch-count chart into a small task.

The listed frame or hoop opening is a separate decision from the fabric you cut. Check a measured opening, or compare Aida with over-two linen. For 200 × 200, follow the existing 200x200 comparison.

Questions about this size chart

Does an 18ct choice promise faster completion?

No time estimate is established here. You still follow the chart’s stitch positions, and personal pace, color changes and technique affect the work.

Is two-strand coverage mandatory on 18ct Aida?

No. It is the existing calculator’s starting assumption. Stitch a sample and adjust the strand input to the result you want.

Will every needle of the suggested size suit my 18ct fabric?

No. Needle dimensions and thread combinations vary. Check the actual needle and cloth, and change the choice if it is difficult to draw through.

What should I check when enlarging an 18ct chart for reading?

A larger printed or on-screen chart changes readability, not the stitched dimensions. Continue using the pattern’s original width and height in stitches.
