28 Count Cross Stitch Size Chart

28ct linen worked over two has the nominal geometry of fourteen full crosses per inch. That equivalence helps compare charts, but it does not verify an individual linen piece. Before trimming a stash cut, measure the thread spacing along both grain directions and confirm that you are counting the fabric threads rather than completed crosses.

28ct linen over 2 gives 14 full crosses per inch: 28 ÷ 2 = 14. Use this chart for stitched inches and centimeters across 24 pattern sizes, with a separate, explicit 3-inch cutting margin per side.

Count describes nominal fabric spacing. Stitching over two on 28ct uses two fabric intervals for each cross; entering 28 as the stitch density would make the design appear half its actual size. Measure your own cloth in both directions before cutting.

Measurements use nominal count, then convert unrounded inches with 1 in = 2.54 cm. Display rounds half-up to two decimal places. Every cut on this page adds only 3 in per side: visible border 0 + finishing allowance 3. The main calculator normally starts with a separate 1.5 in border plus 3 in finishing; the links here explicitly select this table’s 0 + 3 example. Actual cloth, clamps, seams, mats and mounting may need different allowances.

Let the actual linen piece inform the final cut

Check the labeled count against a measured span in several places, following the grain. Unequal horizontal and vertical densities can change the picture’s proportions. A single nominal-count chart cannot certify that both axes of your cloth match its label; if they differ, work out each direction from its measured density.

Keep the intended top edge marked while planning. Rotating a cut may help the rectangle fit, yet it also exchanges the fabric directions. If you wash or prepare the linen first, measure the cloth in the condition in which you intend to stitch. No shrinkage rate is assumed here.

Two decisions for this project

A 110 × 140 design on a labeled stash piece

Nominal over-two geometry gives 7.86 × 10.00 in (19.96 × 25.40 cm). With this page’s finishing allowance, reserve 13.86 × 16.00 in (35.20 × 40.64 cm). Compare that requirement with the actual usable cloth after excluding damaged or unsuitable edges.

A 250 × 350 linen sampler for a tall space

The stitched rectangle is 17.86 × 25.00 in (45.36 × 63.50 cm); the nominal cut is 23.86 × 31.00 in (60.60 × 78.74 cm). Lay out the orientation before cutting. A tall design can fit a cloth piece geometrically while leaving insufficient fabric for the particular clamps or mounting method you own.

24 pattern sizes on 28ct linen over 2

The interval column counts the fabric grid spanned by each design: multiply chart width and height by two. It is a different quantity from full crosses. Use those spans when checking an over-two layout against the threads in your actual cloth.

The listed frame or hoop opening is a separate decision from the fabric you cut. Check a measured opening, or compare Aida with over-two linen. For 200 × 200, follow the existing 200x200 comparison.

Questions about this size chart

What if my 28ct linen measures differently across its width and length?

Treat the two directions separately. Use the corresponding measured density for each stitch dimension instead of assuming the finished picture will retain nominal proportions.

Am I counting linen threads or completed crosses when checking 28ct?

The fabric count refers to nominal threads or intervals per inch. An over-two cross spans two intervals, so counting completed crosses answers a different question.

Does equal nominal size make linen and Aida physically identical?

No. Matching effective density establishes a size comparison only. Weave, thread variation and the behavior of the actual material remain relevant to your choice.

Should I apply a fixed shrinkage percentage to every linen cut?

No universal percentage is established here. Follow the fabric’s care instructions, decide your preparation method and measure the actual piece before final trimming.
