A little planning. A lovely fit.

How Many Stitches Are in a Skein of DMC Floss?

An 8-meter skein contains six separable strands. The number of full crosses it can cover depends on fabric spacing, strands, travel and waste. Here is a reproducible planning model.

How Many Stitches Are in a Skein of DMC Floss? (Confetti Planning Model)

In this adjustable planning model, one 8-meter skein of 6-strand DMC Mouliné Spécial floss yields approximately 1,887 full cross stitches using 2 strands on 14-count Aida with the block-color allowance, 1,779 with the standard mixed allowance, or 1,572 with the heavy-confetti allowance. These are calculated estimates, not stitch-test results.

Why do online thread tables disagree so wildly—with some claiming 2,400 stitches per skein and others warning you will run out at 1,400? Different assumptions about stitch path, working lengths, starts, finishes and traveling threads produce different results. Fabric count and the number of working strands matter too.

According to DMC's official Mouliné Spécial product details, a skein is 8 meters long with 6 separable strands. When separated into single plies, that gives 48 meters (1889.76 inches) of single-strand thread. This length is the product specification; the stitches-per-skein result below comes from the stated model.

For a reproducible estimate, XStitchCalc uses a simplified thread-path assumption. On a grid of pitch p = 1 ÷ SPI, two front diagonals contribute about 2.828p, two assumed back passes contribute 2p, and an assumed thickness allowance contributes 0.35p. The calculator rounds the combined coefficient to 5.18p of thread per full cross, per working strand. Actual stitch paths and fabric thickness vary; 5.18 is a planning coefficient.

The model reserves 15% of the single-strand length for tails and handling, then multiplies the base thread use by 1.15, 1.22 or 1.38 for the selected pattern allowance. These are separate model assumptions: the named percentages are increases in modeled thread use, rather than measured fractions of a skein discarded.

Base thread per strand per full cross (in) = 5.18 ÷ effective SPI
Usable single-strand length (in) = (8 ÷ 0.0254) × 6 × 0.85
Stitches per skein = floor(usable length ÷ (base thread × working strands × allowance))
Pooled skein estimate = total full crosses ÷ stitches per skein

DMC Art. 117 Floss Skein Yield by Fabric Count & Pattern Complexity

All table cells use the same full-cross function as the calculator, including the separate 85% utilization assumption. Half stitches, tent stitches, backstitching and blended colors need a different estimate.

Reproduce the default 14-count, two-strand estimate

At 14 stitches per inch, the base modeled path is 0.370 inches per strand per full cross. With two working strands and the ×1.22 allowance, the model yields 1,779 full crosses per skein. The default 19,600 full crosses therefore uses approximately 11.02 pooled skeins, rounded up to 12 for this single pooled calculation.

Use the actual stitch total when it is available

The default 140 × 200 pattern box contains 28,000 grid squares. Applying an assumed 70% coverage gives 19,600 full crosses. That percentage is a starting assumption, not an observation about your pattern. Replace it with an actual full-cross count or choose coverage that matches your design; blank grid squares do not consume thread.

Round each color separately before buying

A whole-pattern pooled estimate does not tell you the quantity of each shade. Two colors can each require part of a skein, so rounding their combined total can understate the shopping list. Enter each color's actual full-cross count separately, round that color up, subtract usable matching thread already in your stash, and check the pattern's materials list and dye-lot needs.

Adjust the allowance with a sample

Use a measured length of the intended thread and work a representative sample with the same fabric, strands, starts and traveling. Count its completed full crosses and compare them with the model. A sample can guide your own allowance; it does not establish a universal yield for all stitchers or patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cross Stitch Calculations

How do I calculate cross stitch fabric size for linen stitched over two?

Divide your fabric's thread count by 2 before dividing your pattern's stitch dimensions. For example, on 28-count linen stitched over two threads, your effective count is 14 stitches per inch. A 140 × 140 stitch design equals 10 × 10 inches. With a combined 3-inch margin on each side, the cut is 16 × 16 inches; this example has no additional visible border.

How much extra fabric should I add around a cross stitch design?

Choose the visible border and finishing margin separately, then add both on every side. A combined 3-inch margin adds 6 inches to both width and height. The calculator default uses a 1.5-inch visible border plus a 3-inch finishing margin: 4.5 inches per side, or 9 inches added to each dimension. These are adjustable planning allowances. Confirm the fabric needed by your actual hoop, frame or framer before cutting.

Does stitching with the loop start method change how many skeins I need?

A loop start using one folded strand creates two working strands and avoids a loose starting tail. This can change thread usage, but the saving depends on working lengths, starts, finishes and traveling between stitches. The calculator does not apply a fixed loop-start saving. Use a stitched sample to choose an allowance and estimate each color separately.

How many strands of DMC floss give the best coverage on 14 count vs 18 count Aida?

Two strands is a useful starting point for full crosses on 14-, 16- and 18-count Aida. Some patterns call for three strands on 14-count fabric for fuller coverage. The best choice depends on the pattern, thread, fabric color and your preferred appearance. Test a few stitches and follow the pattern instructions; changing the strand count also changes the skein estimate.

How long will it take to finish my cross stitch pattern?

For a manual time estimate, divide the actual number of full crosses by your own measured full crosses per hour. For example, 15,000 crosses at a user-supplied pace of 150 crosses per hour equals 100 hours of active stitching. The pace is an example, not an average stitcher benchmark. Color changes, backstitching, setup and finishing need additional time.
